When Adventure Calls, Say "Yes, Please!"
When life leaves me in the lurch, or my day is a little too quiet, I say, “Yes, please!” to any adventure that calls.
This kindly reply to The Unknown was learned while looking for TV work in Canada in my new adult post-grad life. Instead, I was offered an exciting job teaching dance in Argentina. Though I didn't speak Spanish, or even teach movement, I said, “Yes, please.” And it didn’t matter in sultry, stunning Buenos Aires that I didn’t understand Spanish, not while I was learning to Tango – all in English, as I taught movment classes! So, back in Canada, when my lovely neighbor, a fashion designer, insisted on fixing me up with a smart, sweet, handsome writer-friend named Michael, I said, “Yes, please.” Then, when Michael came to collect a stylish new jacket my neighbor had made, I just happened to peek into her window – thinking that I was helping my ‘blind date adventure’ get an early start. When I saw this handsome writer, with curly red hair, who listened so kindly to my chatty neighbor, and who had a deep and musical tenor voice, with an even bigger “Yes, please!” I agreed to my blind date adventure. Come date night, yet another adventure intervened, a snowy one which derailed the city’s transit, and made Michael very late. I wasn’t even sure he was coming as I sat finishing my beer all alone at the bar. But then through the dim barroom, I was able to see his stunning topping of red curls, a bit snow-covered, as he sought me out in the bar, his tenor voice musically musing to the ladies he encountered, “Are you Nancy? Are you?” I realized this brave fellow also said “Yes!” to adventure and, beaming, I replied, “I am Nancy!” Michael grinned back, asked if I'd like another beer, and I replied as life had taught me: “Yes, please!” We closed the bar that night and began a lifelong adventure that has taken us to Vancouver, and all over North America, to marriage vows, to parenthood, and on to New York City. Our love of adventure and writing continues, so when we learned about StoryTerrace we said, "YES PLEASE!"
