Finding the Bright within the Dark
When I was a young actor in Hollywood, casting directors told me, “You’re a good actor, but we don’t have any Asian roles.” Huh? “What are those?” I quipped, “I’m a 3rd generation American, born here, never been to Asia, and don’t speak a word of it.” But interestingly, in response, I found myself picking up a pen and writing my 1st screenplay, Welcome Home Kelly! and a year later, being called in for a meeting with the president of Universal Studios. Although my then husband got transferred to NY and the film never got made, I wrote Kelly as a stage play, and Kelly and my 1st theatrical play, All About Sneakers , had productions Off-Broadway.In NYC, my 3 sons were now growing up and beginning careers in the arts, and another indie film project was on the horizon—Earthen, a modern-day love story with a beautiful Native American thread woven within—when a thunderbolt hit that changed our lives forever. Chad, my oldest son, was playing football in Los Angeles, collapses and dies of Sudden Cardiac Death from an unknown heart anomaly. Unknown because athletes in our country are not screened before they play sports. SO, for the next 20 years Chad’s non-profit charity, The Chad Foundation for Athletes and Artists provides 10,000 echocardiograms and EKGS to detect lethal heart anomalies to safeguard other young hearts and prevent Sudden Cardiac Death. When Covid hit, I was just finishing my 1st memoir, CHAD, A Celebration of Life – Beyond A Mother’s Memories, which raised awareness of SCD and promoted a Healthy Heart Lifestyle in the Young. Due to the book’s reception—it also received the support of Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA—I have been contracted to write 4 other memoirs and a stage and screenplay adaptation of the Neff book, What would the Founding Fathers Say? Dialogs 1789-2040. And now, I dedicate my writing to memoirs and biographies storytelling the journey of other people’s stories. There is nothing more important than the Story of Your Life. Every story enriches the world.Destiny led me into a room where on the wall was a Chinese character for ‘Crisis.’ It was explained to me, “The character for crisis has two parts: danger and opportunity.” I have chosen to live my life led by the latter.
