Camping time-line

Camping could very well be the no. 1 favourite Dutch hobby. The first small recreational tents that were produced around 1900 were a big hit among wealthy holidaymakers in Holland. As early as 1912, the Dutch Tourist Camping Club was established. Most of the members were wealthy young men, as camping was a rich person’s hobby at the time. When the department store V&D started selling camping tents in the fifties, there was no stopping the Dutch, and so camping went from an elite pastime to a popular sport. Currently over 4 million people go camping within the Netherlands alone.

For this month’s theme of holiday, we took an overview of camping habits through the decades. That’s from a tent on two sticks in the thirties, via roadside tourism in the fifties, to fully equipped lodge tents in the South of France in 2014. Take a look at nine decades of camping with us.
