A ‘70s Childhood
I was always a bit of a tomboy when I was growing up. It was the mid ‘70s and we lived in the countryside, so from an early age I would spend my weekends and holidays helping my dad in his workshop.
My dad reminded me of Belle’s father in Beauty and the Beast – a rather mad inventor of things and he was always fixing something for the neighbours.
One Saturday afternoon when I was dismantling a tape-recorder, Mr Pike, from across the road, tapped on the door and asked Dad if he would pop over to check his TV because he couldn’t get it to work and he wanted to watch the match.
Dad agreed and said I could go with him to help – after all, I was nearly nine and I knew a lot about TVs and how they worked by then.
