Why you should start writing your autobiography today

By Liset Hamming, Managing Editor, Story Terrace

Do you recall some anecdotes from your youth? Can you retell your grandparents’ stories? Did you ever think of recording all these stories so as not to let them go to waste?

However small or personal they might seem to you, for your friends and family they hold a tremendous amount of information, and reading them can bring the pleasure of nostalgia. Stories from your youth, career, travels, a great love. Joyful memories, periods of endurance, unexpected turning-points and most of all your treasured anecdotes.

Here are the four main reasons to stop putting your autobiography off and start writing or have a professional start writing for you now:

1. Your thoughts you have today are unique. New experiences and changing priorities will change them by tomorrow. Imagine how wonderful it would be in five or ten years’ time to read your current view on the present and past.

2. The past is a small backpack you carry with you. A backpack you can draw inspiration from, but which can weigh on you from time to time. When you write down your memories, a load can drop off your shoulders and leave you free once again to set your sights on the future

3. Step aboard a time machine and dream along: all those memories are colourful scraps from the past, which will let you relive an event for a moment. When you begin to write, complete stories will come back to you and the fragments will start to form a harmonious whole

4. What’s the value of stories without sharing them? Don’t just write for yourself, write for your loved ones. The best way to share your memories with your partner, children or grandchildren is to start getting your stories onto paper.

Set an hour aside tonight to write down your first anecdote and other stories will flow from there.
