Tinder Love

Tinder Love

Watch out, twenty-somethings. The next person you left-swipe on Tinder might just be your favourite uncle or even your own mom. Users aged 35-54 now make up 15% of the app’s population. Thanks to the new media, Marcel, who is in his late 50s, still finds love on the menu.

‘I was married for twenty-seven years. When that ended, I had a special relationship with a childhood sweetheart. We had some fun flirting, but quite soon it fizzled out. I have lovely family and friends and I didn’t feel like anything was missing. Still, a hint of hope remained that one day I would be able to share the beautiful things in life again with a special someone. Picture of Marcel

At my age, I’m not hanging around pubs every weekend and the ladies in my local are taken. It started out as a joke, creating an account on Tinder. A friend of mine convinced me to do it, and my daughters strongly agreed. After all, they measure their dad’s happiness by his luck in love.

Ping! A match-notification. Out of nowhere, Ellen started to chat. Nervously, but with curiosity, I messaged back. And we continued doing that, on WhatsApp as well – where we were very open about our intentions, which set the bar quite high considering we hadn’t yet met. Our first meeting happened a month later near a lake. As the afternoon unfolded, we connected while strolling around the water.

At our age, there’s a load of love you carry with you. There are no games. Although we’re not in a hurry, we’ve moved pretty fast . Last week I met her whole family and my daughters have already ‘approved’. Two weeks ago, we simultaneously, and symbolically, deleted our Tinder accounts.

If you’re in your late fifties, and in love like a teenager, then luck is on your side!’
