Mouse Ears Look Good On You
Mickey Mouse ears to be exact. Truthfully, I’ve been proudly wearing mouse ears since before I could walk. I’ve strolled down Main Street with a bluebird on my shoulder through Cinderella’s Castle nearly 30 times at Disney World and Disneyland. It’s all thanks to Donald Duck’s biggest fan: my dad.
He’d sprinkle fairy dust and whisk away my sister, brother and me to “The Happiest Place on Earth” nearly every summer when we were kids. Some of my fondest, most memorable experiences are being with my family riding rides, taking pictures with princesses, singing Disney songs while waiting in line and laughing together. Cherished, magical memories.
We have countless photo albums, old-school VHS tapes and regular family talks about trips, which makes the joy come rushing back. “I remember the first time you rode Thunder Mountain Railroad. You were young, just 6 or 7 years old,” my dad shared about my first roller coaster experience. “You jumped off the ride, threw your hands in the air and yelled, ‘Woohoo, let’s go again!’ I knew I’d just created a Disney coaster monster!”
It was only fitting that I passed on the magic of Disney to my own three kids — twin boys and a daughter — who have been to Disney several times already. We simply fly to the second star to the right, and straight on ‘til morning. And we go all out! Disney shirt every day? Check! Micky and Minnie Mouse ears every day? Check! Delicious Mickey Mouse ice cream bars? Check!
The best, though, is watching my dad gleefully skipping through Fantasyland and over to Tomorrowland and Adventureland with my children — all of them giddy and ecstatic, soaking in the fun. My dad is the happiest of all, sharing such bliss with his grandchildren.
In what felt like forever, when my kids were finally tall enough, we dashed over to Frontierland for their first roller coaster ride on the one and only Thunder Mountain Railroad. As the train took off, the happiest screams I’ve ever heard rang out from my little ones. Hands high in the air, wind blowing their hair, mile-wide smiles. As we exited the station when the ride was over, in uncanny mindreading unison, they yelled, “Woohoo, let’s go again, that was amazing!” Never has there been a better full-circle moment.
Now, our Mouse Ears are always at the ready — magic awaits.
