One Step Behind
“Let’s play hide-and-seek!” he shouts, dashing at full speed towards my bedroom.
He holds his arms straight out behind him, indicating that he is now an airplane in flight. I watch, open-mouthed. For weeks he has been playing hide-and-seek by cramming his small body between my back and the sofa.
“Where is he? Has anyone seen him? Why is this couch so lumpy?” I have asked each time, pretending not to hear the maniacal giggles directly in my ear.
But there he goes, running off to hide! To really hide. Where and how has he learned this? I dutifully count to 10 before I follow. I open the door to my bedroom slowly, unsure of what to expect – could he be behind the door?
No, he is sitting smack in the middle of my bed, staring right at me. This hiding business is turning out to be pretty complicated.
“So…” I begin, concerned that I have ruined the game by establishing eye contact too soon.
“Look for me in the closet,” he suggests helpfully.
I do this. I actually do this.
“Are… are you in the closet?” I inquire, as I peer inside.
“No, I’m on the bed!” the gleeful response comes.
