I may not know much in this crazy world, but there is one thing I’m certain of: I have always been a devout chocolate lover.
My favorite story to highlight this takes us back to a younger Janelle—specifically, “Jenny” aged two.
My mother was recording me as I sat in my favorite highchair. I had fallen asleep, face first, in a plate of spaghetti. She and a friend called out to me several times, each crooning to me, “wake up, Jenny!” “Come on Jenny, look, spaghetti, yum yum!” my mother’s friend tried. Call and croon as they might, I seemed to be in the deepest of slumbers. A sea of extremely curly, ash blonde hair poked out from the top of my spaghetti plate, gently rising and falling with each breath. It was the only thing that wasn’t hopelessly covered in marinara sauce.
Finally, after several failed attempts, my mother said the golden words.
“Chocolate cake Jenny, look!”
I immediately bolted up, awake and ready for cake. My mother and her friend roared with laughter, ringing like so many bells in my ears.
I have loved chocolate since I knew how to love anything, and continue to love it with the same intensity today. Want to locate me in a pinch? Just yell “chocolate!” and no matter where you are I’ll come and find you.
