Knocked-out in second round in 1934, finals in 2014 for the Dutch team?

Het Nederlands Elftal 1934

By Anne Brugts, Story Terrace

The Dutch team is preparing for the round of 16 after having reached first place in the group stage. The team will therefore face Mexico on Sunday.

Eighty years ago, the Dutch team found itself in a similar position. Then, in 1934, the Netherlands joined the football world cup tournament for the first time. During this world cup, which took place in Italy, the Dutch team came first in the group stage, too.

Let’s hope history won’t repeat itself for the Dutch, as they lost their round of 16 match in 1934 with a 3-2 defeat by the Swiss.
