Upon returning to the UK, his father asked him to help with a project in France, and he ended up staying for 15 years, working in a range of industries. He returned to the UK in 2012 and later started working for Story Terrace. David’s passions are seeing businesses and people develop. He has 2 children who keep him on his toes, and loves London with all that it offers. Travel and Sports have always interested him, and after encouragement from the CTO he aims to take up cycling!

The Summer of 1980

I was at my parents’ home on holiday from boarding school, watching Allan Wells win the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Moscow. Suddenly, at around 8pm in the evening, my mother shouted: ‘Someone is breaking in next door!’

Rushing out of the front door of our house, I saw 4 men running down the road. Immediately I took chase, and being 15 years old, caught up to the gang and rugby tackled one of the members. I ended up restraining him, and eventually my parents caught up. A striking memory for me was that my mother had picked up our silver family candlesticks as a weapon in case the burglar was armed…

Sirens then filled the air, and the Police took the person I’d caught into custody, and ended up catching the rest of the gang at Waterloo Station as they escaped up to London by train. I filled out a Police statement and thought that was the end of it. Later on I found out that my parents had asked the Police for no publicity as they were concerned that this was a criminal gang and were fearful of retribution.

Surrey Police, however, wanted to thank us; so a few months later they invited my mother, father and myself to Woking Police Station for a personal guided tour, followed by a reception in the bar. It was a surreal moment, myself underage drinking in the Police bar whilst my parents, who were very sociable, had a merry time. Needless to say we were given a lift back home in a Police squad car.
