Father’s Day: Get to Know Dad Better!

4 out of 5 people wished they knew more about their father’s lives

An estimated 4,444,500* stories will be told to children this Father’s Day

Research of 2000 people commissioned last month revealed that 4 in every 5 children (88%) wished they knew more about the lives of their fathers, with 1 in 6 people revealing they actually knew more stories about their mother than father. An estimated 4,444,500* stories will be told by fathers to their family this Sunday making an average of one story per father, with 47% of respondents describing accounts about their life as ‘funny’ closely followed by inspirational (40%). The research also shows that respondents’ first memories of their fathers were between the ages of one and five, with 1 in 5 people’s favourite memories concerning a trip or holiday. Given the chance, 65% of people wished they they could write down the stories and memories of their father and mother on paper.

The Father’s Day survey of 2000 people shows the significance of stories and memories around Father’s Day.
The survey also showed that experience gifts far outweighed possessions as the most popular gifts given to a Dad on Father’s Day, including city breaks, helicopter lesson, football tickets and track days. Grandchildren came in a close second! The findings also showed that David Beckham and Brad Pitt have divided opinion as the most inspirational celebrity father figures in the modern age, both garnering 30% of the votes closely followed by Jamie Oliver (26%) and Will Smith (14%). Meanwhile Nelson Mandela (44%) has closely pipped Winston Churchill (43%) as the most inspirational father from history, followed by Albert Einstein and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Rutger Bruining founder of Story Terrace, commented: “We weren’t at all surprised to see that so many stories get told by fathers on Father’s Day. Dates in the calendar like this stir up nostalgia triggered by gifts and experiences, and these accounts make their way to the forefront of family socialising… whether children like it or not! We are seeing more and more people wanting to preserve their stories to pass on within the family and we think this hugely important so details do not get lost”.
